Breaking barriers: NFT celebrates deaf talent during International Deaf Week

By Staff Reporter

As the world marks International Deaf Week from 22–28 September, a global call to celebrate the identity, culture, and rights of Deaf communities, Nkomwa Foundation Trust (NFT) has once again proven why it stands tall as a beacon of inclusion.

This year’s theme, “No Human Rights Without Sign Language Rights,” resonates strongly with NFT’s bold initiatives to empower Deaf individuals and give them platforms to thrive.

One shining example of NFT’s impact is Defence Ndlovu (23), a gifted young artist from Gwanda who is now an Assistant Art Teacher at JZ High School in Filabusi.

As a perosn with a hearing impairment, Defence has defied odds and broken barriers—thanks in part to the unwavering support of NFT.

Since 2020, NFT has walked closely with Defence, sponsoring his education from Form 1 to Form 4 and ensuring he remained in school despite the socio-economic challenges that often push learners with disabilities out of classrooms.

Beyond academics, NFT nurtured his artistic talent, providing mentorship, materials, and opportunities that allowed him to refine his creativity and build the confidence he now instils in his students.

“Defence proved to the world that nothing can stop him from attaining his dreams,” said NFT Director, Mr. Pick Nkomwa.

“As NFT, we continue supporting persons with hearing impairment from community level in various interventions like education and lifestyles development. Though strides are being made to attain inclusion in our communities, there are still gaps that need collective action to bring this marginalized group of people on the table. As of 2025, NFT has Deaf youths actively engaged in construction, cosmetology, and farming. The journey continues as we support others as well,” he added.

For Defence, teaching art is more than a profession—it is a testimony that with the right support, Deaf individuals can inspire communities and redefine what is possible.

His success is a beacon of hope for many young people with disabilities who are still fighting for recognition and opportunity.

As International Deaf Week reminds the world that there can be “no human rights without sign language rights,” NFT stands firm in its mission: creating real opportunities for Deaf people, amplifying their voices, and showing that inclusion benefits not just individuals, but entire communities.
