COMMUNITIES TURN AWARENESS INTO ACTION AS TSHANYAUGWE VILLAGERS MOBILISE WHEELCHAIR FOR RESIDENT WITH DISABILITY

Gwanda – Six years after Nkomwa Foundation Trust (NFT) launched a disability awareness campaign encouraging communities to take responsibility for supporting vulnerable members in their own villages, the initiative is beginning to yield tangible results, with residents of Tshanyaugwe Village in Ward 18 mobilising resources to secure a wheelchair for a local man with physical disability.
The donation of a wheelchair to Mr. Sam Ndlovu, who has had a physical disability since birth, is being hailed as a practical demonstration of how communities can transform awareness into action by identifying local needs and working together to address them.
The wheelchair was donated by a well-wisher following the mobilisation efforts of Ward 18 Councillor Mr. Mphathiswa Ncube, reflecting the growing culture of community ownership that has been fostered through NFT’s disability awareness campaign, which began in 2020.
The campaign encourages communities to identify persons with disabilities within their villages and collectively mobilise available resources to improve their quality of life.
Held at Tshanyaugwe Village , the handover ceremony drew traditional leaders, educators, disability advocates and community members, all united in celebrating an initiative that demonstrated the power of local solutions to local challenges.
Speaking during the ceremony, Councillor Ncube thanked the well-wisher for responding to the community’s call and reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring that persons with disabilities are not left behind.
“Today we are gathered for the handover of a wheelchair to our community member, Mr. Sam Ndlovu. This donation brings comfort, dignity and hope to the recipient and his family. I extend my sincere gratitude to all those who contributed and demonstrated kindness and compassion, most notably our esteemed well-wisher. As Ward Councillor, I remain committed to advocating for persons with disabilities and ensuring that no one is left behind. Let us continue to work together as a caring and united community,” he said.

Village Head Mr. N. Dube urged residents to continue embracing a culture of caring for one another, saying collective responsibility strengthens community bonds while promoting inclusion and equal opportunities for persons with disabilities.
The wheelchair was officially handed over by Nkomwa Foundation Trust Community Disability Facilitator Ms. Progress Ndlovu, who commended the donor, local leadership and the Tshanyaugwe community for embracing the spirit of self-reliance promoted through the organisation’s awareness programme.
She said the donation was evidence that communities had moved beyond merely recognising the challenges faced by persons with disabilities to actively mobilising solutions from within their own localities.
Local school teachers joined community members in witnessing the handover, underscoring the importance of multi-sectoral support in promoting disability inclusion.
For Mr. Ndlovu, the wheelchair represents far more than a mobility aid. It is expected to significantly improve his independence by making it easier for him to move around, participate in community activities and reduce the physical burden on his caregivers.
Residents described the occasion as a milestone for the village, noting that it demonstrated how awareness, when combined with community commitment, can deliver lasting and meaningful change.
Since launching its disability awareness campaign in 2020, Nkomwa Foundation Trust has consistently encouraged communities to become active participants in improving the lives of persons with disabilities rather than relying solely on external assistance.
Through continuous community engagement, villages have increasingly embraced the responsibility of mobilising local resources, partnerships and goodwill to support their own vulnerable members.
The successful mobilisation of a wheelchair for Mr. Ndlovu stands as one of the campaign’s clearest success stories, illustrating that empowered communities are capable of identifying needs, mobilising resources and restoring dignity to their own people.
Residents expressed appreciation to the donor, local leadership and Nkomwa Foundation Trust for inspiring a culture of compassion, accessibility and inclusion that continues to transform lives across rural communities.
