Gwanda — Thirty-three officials from government ministries and agencies in Matabeleland South Province have graduated with first-level certificates in Sign Language training and disability inclusion awareness, in a move expected to improve accessibility and public service delivery for persons with hearing impairments.

The graduation ceremony was held at the Edward Ndlovu Memorial Library in Gwanda on 18 May 2026 following a training programme spearheaded by Nkomwa Foundation Trust (NFT) in partnership with World Vision.

The Office of the District Development Coordinator attended the event as guest of honour and commended the initiative for promoting inclusivity within government institutions and communities.

Speaking during the certificate presentation ceremony, NFT Director Dr. Pick Nkomwa said the training represented more than the acquisition of a communication skill, describing it as a commitment to inclusion, equality and accessible service delivery.

“Communication is the bridge that connects people, and by learning Sign Language, you have chosen to break barriers that often exclude many from accessing essential public services,” said Dr. Nkomwa.

“Your dedication demonstrates a deep understanding that an inclusive government is one that leaves no one behind.”

He encouraged the graduates to apply the skills gained during the training with compassion, patience and professionalism in their workplaces.

“As you graduate today, I encourage you to put this knowledge into practice with compassion, patience and professionalism. Let this training inspire broader efforts within our institutions to create environments where every citizen feels heard, valued and respected,” he said.

Dr. Nkomwa also commended the facilitators and organisers for equipping government officials with what he described as a life-changing skill and expressed gratitude to World Vision-Gwanda Cluster for supporting the programme.

Disability advocates say training public officials in Sign Language is an important step towards creating inclusive institutions that uphold the rights and dignity of persons with disabilities.

The initiative is expected to strengthen interaction between government departments and members of the deaf community while promoting disability inclusion awareness across public institutions.
